Your journey begins with a scenic drive through the Canterbury countryside to Birdlings Flat, where you’ll enjoy a relaxed morning tea overlooking the rugged coastline. From here, continue along the scenic roads of Banks Peninsula, passing volcanic landscapes, rolling farmland, and beautiful harbour views.
Arriving in Akaroa, you’ll enjoy a guided tour of this charming French-inspired village, renowned for its historic buildings, waterfront setting, boutique shops, and vibrant café culture. There will be free time to explore the township, browse local galleries, and enjoy a delicious cafe lunch. A highlight of your visit is entry to the famous Giants House, one of New Zealand’s most unique and colourful gardens. This award-winning attraction features extraordinary mosaic sculptures, vibrant artworks, and beautifully landscaped gardens overlooking Akaroa Harbour.
For those wanting to experience Akaroa Harbour from the water, an optional two-hour Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise upgrade is available. Widely regarded as one of the region’s premier wildlife experiences, the cruise provides opportunities to encounter rare Hector’s dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, little penguins, and a variety of seabirds while exploring the spectacular volcanic harbour. (Please note: The harbour cruise option is subject to availability and replaces the visit to the Giant’s House.)
After departing Akaroa, the return journey travels via Little River, where there will be a brief stop to visit the local gallery and facilities. The tour then continues into the tranquil Kaituna Valley Scenic Reserve for a gentle guided walk through native bush.
