Guided Caving & Castle Hill Itinerary
Morning – Caving
We start our adventure by travelling west towards the mountains across the flat farmland of the Canterbury Plains. We make a stop after 45 minutes at the “Darfield Bakery” (we will provide lunch, but you might like to sample a classic Kiwi pie or coffee) before continuing our journey to the caving area. Once arriving at Cave Stream, your guide will kit you out with caving gear and provide a safety briefing before heading down to the cave entrance. It will take us approximately 45 minutes to make our way through the 594 meters of the Cave Stream limestone cave. Our route follows the crystal-clear water upstream through the winding chambers and small waterfalls. The final section has a 3-meter fixed ladder to climb past the most significant waterfall as we exit the cave. Back at the car park, hot drinks and a picnic lunch will be provided while you enjoy the mountain views.
Afternoon – Castle Hill
A short drive from Cave Stream leads you to Castle Hill/Kura Tawhiti, a breathtaking natural wonder showcasing New Zealand’s stunning landscape. As you arrive, your guide will share fascinating insights into the area’s rich spiritual, recreational, and geological significance, enhancing your understanding of this remarkable site. You’ll have the opportunity to wander among the impressive boulders, where you can take in the unique rock formations and the serene beauty of the surroundings before regrouping with your guide at the car park. On the return journey, if time permits, you can enjoy a delightful stop in Springfield. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to take a memorable photo with the iconic giant doughnut—an intriguing landmark rich in local history that your guide will happily share with you. Finally, you’ll be escorted back to the meeting point in Christchurch or to your accommodation, concluding an unforgettable day of exploration.
